Max Verstappen and Red Bull are overwhelming favorites to win the 2022 Formula 1 world championship following their win in Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix.
Red Bull continued their winning ways in Montreal, with reigning Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen holding off Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz Jr. in the closing laps to win the Canadian Grand Prix.
The win at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve was Red Bull’s seventh of the 2022 season and sixth in a row. Of their six wins on that winning streak, five have gone to Verstappen, which puts him in ninth place on the all-time wins list with 26.
Six races ago, Verstappen sat in sixth place in the driver standings With just one race finish — a win — in three starts this season. He sat 46 points out of the points lead, which was held by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Leclerc had two wins and a runner-up finish at that point.
That 46-point deficit was more than three times as large as any deficit Verstappen faced in 2021, when he never sat below second place in the standings and ended up narrowly winning the title over Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton.
In the last six races, Verstappen has outscored Leclerc, who has just a single podium finish during that span, by 95 points. In fact, Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, who earned a victory and three other podium finishes over that stretch, has also passed Leclerc in the standings.
Verstappen now leads the standings by 46 points over Perez, with Leclerc a further three points behind. That 46-point lead is the largest lead the 24-year-old Dutchman has ever held in the driver standings.
Additionally, with Red Bull sitting 1-2 with their drivers in the driver standings, they now have a commanding 76-point lead over Ferrari in the constructor standingswith Mercedes a further 40 points behind.
Verstappen’s lead in the driver standings and Red Bull’s lead in the constructor standings are reflected in their betting odds to win their respective world championships, where both have become overwhelming favorites.
Verstappen, who was never more than a -500 favorite at any point last year (and didn’t become that big of a favorite until much later in the season) before winning his maiden title, is going for his second straight title, while Red Bull are going for their first since 2013.
