Dyson has created a pair of noise canceling headphones that feature a built-in air purifier to help protect their users from air pollution.

The tech company has shared an initial overview of its new Dyson Zone audio device, which is designed to deliver fresh air and clear sound by combining over-ear headphones with a contactless visor to deliver “a continuous stream of fresh air to your nose and mouth” in an effort to help fight pollutants. different types of air in the air, from “industrial emissions to automobile exhaust”.

The Dyson Zone features a two-stage filtration system that deals with city fumes and pollutants using high-performance filters and two micro-air pumps. The compressors in each ear piece are said to “pull air through the dual-layer filters and release two streams of fresh air into the wearer’s nose and mouth, which are directed through a non-contact visor.”

In addition to the air filtration system, the headphones fulfill the traditional purpose of delivering rich, immersive sound. Dyson Zone headphone cushions form around the listener’s ear to reduce unwanted disturbances with “advanced noise cancellation, low distortion, and neutral frequency response, to faithfully repeat music or sound as the creator intended.”

Dyson engineers have been working on these air purifying headphones for the past six years, and there have been over 500 prototypes in that time. The team began by analyzing data on urban air pollution and developing a preliminary concept for such a device, before then moving on to user testing to fine-tune the design and ensure optimum product performance.

“Air pollution is a global problem – it affects us everywhere we go. In our homes, at school, at work and while we travel, whether on foot, on bike, or on public or private transportation. The Dyson area cleans the air,” said Chief Engineer Jake. Dyson on the new technology “Breathe on the go.” “And unlike face masks, they provide a column of fresh air without touching your face.”

Dyson is known for harnessing innovative new technology and bringing devices that might once have been considered futuristic fiction into the real world, like the 360 Eye robotic vacuum. The Dyson Zone headphones are set to become the company’s latest invention to hit the market, with the product set to go on sale in the fall at a yet-to-be announced price.
