We were “this close” to greatness. We are saddened to report that a planned musical number from Thor: Love and Thunder, in which Christian Bale dances to a Kate Bush song, was cut from the film. Bale himself revealed the cut in an interview with Total Filmas he discussed the plans he and director Taika Waititi had for the MCU flick, which opens in theaters on July 8 in the United States.

Waititi is known for his quirky film style, and his colorful take on Thor: Ragnarok revamped the series, after the disappointing Thor: The Dark World flopped with Marvel fans. For Love and ThunderBale has created perhaps the creepiest villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Gorr the God Butcher, but that didn’t stop Waititi from having a little fun with it, according to Deadline. “Taika and I wanted to do a whole dance, which we didn’t get to do, but we had all this sort of Kate Bush stuff that we worked at,” Bale said. “I think he just realized he was never going to be allowed to put that in the final film.”

Having a Christian Bale dance number featuring a Kate Bush song in Thor: Love and Thunder would have been the icing on the cake for the year the British singer has had so far. Her song “Running Up That Hill” from her 1985 Hounds of Love album was featured prominently in season four of Netflix’s Stranger Things, causing it to hit #1 on the UK and streaming charts more than 35 years after its release. In a post on her website, Bush thanked the Duffer Brothers, the creators and producers of the show, for including her song in the storyline. “I salute the Duffer Brothers for their courage – taking this new series into a much more adult and darker place. I want to thank them so much for bringing the song into so many people’s lives,” she said. Even without the Kate Bush song, Love and Thunder likely won’t be hurting for good music. With Chris Pratt and the Guardians of the Galaxy appearing in the film, a solid soundtrack of classic music is sure to be included.

The planned Kate Bush dance number for Gorr in Love and Thunder was never filmed, it appears, so we won’t even be able to see it as a deleted scene at some point. Christian Bale did not reveal which Kate Bush song would have been featured in the dance number, so we have only our imagination to help us speculate. Had the dance been filmed, it would have been a nice bookend to another Bale film, 2000’s American Psycho, which featured a musical number during which The Dark Knight actor kills future Joker actor Jared Leto with an ax, all while Huey Lewis’ song “Hip to be Square” plays. Here’s the scene, but be warned if you haven’t seen it: there’s lots of blood and R-rated profanity, so it’s definitely not safe for work.

Ax-murdering to 80s music wasn’t the only musical bit Christian Bale has performed on film. In 1992, he had one of his first big movie hits with Newsies, a Disney musical about turn-of-the-century newspaper delivery boys in New York City. He would go on to much bigger hits with the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy, as well as films like The Prestige, Terminator: Salvation, The Big Short, American Hustleand Ford vs. Ferrari. He’s been nominated for four Academy Awards for his acting, winning the Best Actor Oscar in 2010 for The Fighter.
