3 Possible Landing Points for Hailie Deegan in 2023

With her current team switching to Toyota, Hailie Deegan’s career at NASCAR is set to see a change. What are some possible options for her in 2023?

Hayley Deegan will see a change in her NASCAR 2023. After spending the past two seasons driving the No. 1 Ford full time to David Gilliand Racing, the team rebranded to TRICON Garage, the Toyota Racing Development Team (TRD).

With Kyle Busch transitioning from Joe Gibbs Racing to Richard Childress Racing, the Truck Series team, Kyle Busch Motorsports, will switch from Toyota to Chevrolet to match the manufacturer for which it is set to compete in the Cup Series.

This created a need for the TRD team in the truck series, paving the way for David Gilliand Racing to transition from Ford to Toyota. Deegan, a contract driver with Ford, will have to look for another ride next season.

Competing for Ford in the truck series is not a very likely option. While there are Ford teams like Front Row Motorsports, they only use one truck for Zane Smith, who is not only on the verge of making his Daytona 500 debut with the team next year but looks to be a big part of their future plans after that. They are unlikely to invest in another driver.

Deegan has a notable relationship with Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) team owner Tony Stewart, and her next move with Ford will likely be related to her future with the team.

With the manufacturer in mind but uncertainty still looming, here are three potential landing points for Deegan in 2023.

Competing full time in a series is any driver’s priority, as stability and the opportunity to race for a championship is a much more desirable path than jumping from ride to ride. However, the opportunity to compete across a diverse schedule for Ford, Deegan and the company should not be ruled out.

SHR fielded a part-time Truck Series team under the Haas Racing Development banner for Cole Custer in 2014, and they could choose to do the same with Deegan. Additionally, Xfinity Series teams such as BJ McLeod Motorsports, which have had SHR drivers racing in their gear before, can find an open seat for the 21-year-old.

On the Cup Series side, Rick Ware Racing aligned his team with Ford and SHR ahead of the 2022 season and used the Ford #15 to serve as a spin-off for several drivers, including SHR reserve driver Ryan Preece.

Bryce took advantage of a similar opportunity this year, when he signed a standby contract with SHR. Now he Become Stewart-Haas Racing’s 41st Ford Contender in the Trophy Series. A spare contract or part-time schedule may not be the most ideal for any driver, but history shows that it can pay off, and it can pay off on Deegan’s career.
